WASHINGTON — On Thursday, July 9, 2020, House Democrats advanced an amendment in the House Appropriations Committee that would restore millions of dollars in critical aid to Palestine refugees, reversing the Trump administration’s 2018 decision to terminate humanitarian funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the only agency mandated with ensuring the well-being of Palestine refugees in the region.

In response, Mara Kronenfeld, Executive Director of the UNRWA USA National Committee (UNRWA USA), shared the following:

On Thursday, House Democrats once again made clear their strong support of humanitarian funding for Palestine refugees, and for the indispensable nature of the agency that serves them. UNRWA has been critical in supporting the livelihood of 5.6 million refugees amid this global pandemic, ensuring the continued provision of essential education, healthcare, micro-finance, relief and social services, and emergency assistance. We encourage the full restoration of U.S. assistance to UNRWA amid this unprecedented global health crisis and going forward, so that the Agency can continue to provide an already vulnerable community with lifesaving resources and services.”
