Voices of UNRWA blog:
palestine refugee stories
The Voices of UNRWA blog is dedicated to providing American readers with real stories of Palestine refugees and their lives.
This blog features many stories of UNRWA alumni, many of whom now call the United States home.
We welcome guest writers, especially UNRWA alumni, to contribute stories and articles for consideration to our collection.
If you’re interested in guest writing, please get in touch.
Palestinian Women: Celebrating Mother’s Day in the face of Siege, Walls and Borders
In honor of Arab Mother’s Day, guest blogger and UNRWA USA’s Director of Philanthropy Hani Almadhoun writes a poem for the mothers of Gaza, and shares insight on what this day means for Palestine refugee mothers in Gaza and how you can honor the leading women in your life.
Palestine’s Picasso: Malak Mattar
Khalil Gibran once said, “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls,” and Malak Mattar - like many Palestine refugees is no exception to this strength. Malak takes the ugly and transforms it into beauty; she views the destruction surrounding her hometown and creates masterpieces.
Malak is a 20-year-old artist and Palestine refugee from the Gaza Strip. Surviving repetitive Israeli military assaults on the strip, she began painting as a form of coping and self-expression. Painting became her emotional release, and helped her cope with fear, anxiety, and distress. Malak’s story and Picasso-like style of paintings have gained her worldwide recognition. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in Spain, Turkey, Costa Rica, India, and the United States. We had a chance to speak to Malak during her latest US tour. She told us about her upbringing, art inspiration and challenges faced by young women artists in Gaza.
The magicians behind UNRWA USA
The Gaza 5K is UNRWA USA’s signature event, and since 2012 it's been instrumental in generating critical mental health support for Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip. But really, YOU are the magic behind our mission.
Rana Abu-Sbaih is a long time friend and supporter of our work. In honor of our upcoming NYC Gaza 5K happening in Brooklyn on Saturday, March 5, 2022, we briefly chatted with Rana about her contributions over the years, what inspires her volunteerism, and why she chooses UNRWA USA to express her solidarity with Palestine refugees.
